When the philosopher Nietzsche said, “Without music, life would be a mistake,” do you think he included singing in the car as part of that statement? Because without singing, and singing in the car, not only would life be a mistake, it might not be as pleasant or as long-lived. There are actually some health benefits of singing in the car.
Real research suggests that singing has an effect on us akin to intoxication–without the hangover! That’s because it promotes the release of endorphins and oxytocin. These hormones are responsible for feelings of pleasure and reduced stress. It also decreases cortisol levels, high levels of which have been known to have a detrimental effect on our immune system.
Of course, all of this relates to singing in general. But singing in the car is a perfect place to exercise those pipes. If people have trouble listening to you sing, roll the windows up and belt away. If you have trouble listening to yourself sing, just crank the tunes until you drown yourself out.
Not that we’re suggesting that singing with your travel mates is a bad idea. There are even health benefits of singing in the car with others. There’s a study out there that found that heartbeat patterns of those who sing together synchronize. Might be a good strategy for conflict resolution!
